Gajar ka halwa

Gajar ka halwa or carrot pudding has been one of the most favorite sweet dish of me and my parents; my father is a big fan of it. In India especially during the months of November, December, January we get those good red big size carrots which make best gajar halwas.
Ever since out of for studying eating the authentic halwa had become occasional yearly affair, that is only when I am at my mom’s place. This year as my mom said, she already made it almost 5-6 times 😀

gajarhalwaSince I remember, on the new year eve especially, gajar ka halwa used to be made without fail and we would eat it at around 12 in night…steaming hot gajar halwa while being comfortably warm under blankets in chilly winters of North India. As I say this I am actually visualizing those days…truly nostalgic!

After our wedding, since I have a fully functional kitchen and moreover since I miss those childhood days and traditions…this year I wanted to relive and enjoy halwa on the new year eve…Set out on my endeavor to make gajar halwa…got the recipe from my Mom and in almost 1 hour which includes preparation time,I was able to make it and guess what it turned out to be delicious 🙂 😛 and was certified by none other than my husband and friends!

So here is my gajar ka halwa recepie:

• Carrots 8-10 medium

• Cashewnuts 5-6

• Almonds 5-6

• Raisins 10-15

• Pure ghee 3 tablespoons

• Milk 2 cups

• Green cardamom powder 1/4 teaspoon

• Milk maid condensed milk can or Mawa (khoya) 1 cup (I used milk maid condensed milk)

• Sugar 3/4 cup

Peel, wash and grate carrots.
Chop cashewnuts.
Blanch almonds in half a cup of hot water for five minutes.
Drain, cool, peel and slice them. Wash raisins and pat them dry.

In a thick-bottomed pan, heat ghee add grated carrots and sauté for five minutes.
Then add milk, green cardamom powder and cook on medium heat for five to six minutes or till the milk evaporates and the carrots are cooked.
Stir in the condensed milk or grated khoya and sugar and cook for two to three minutes or till the sugar melts and mixes well, stirring continuously.
Continue to cook for two minutes more.
Garnish with chopped cashewnuts, sliced almonds and raisins.
Serve hot or at room temperature.

We can store halwa in fridge for a week and reaheat before serving!

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,800 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 30 trips to carry that many people.

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 6,600 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 11 years to get that many views.

So true, it is, had to reblog 🙂

You Monsters Are People.

I have been noticing a few new trends on social media sites. What about you?

Good Night!

I was finally in my flat in Hyderabad, tired like hell and anything I needed was a peaceful sleep, but what do I hear…anklet sounds with some time interval…the origin of sound looked like the lift lobby;I was alone and too tired to get up and investigate…I ignored and it and slept, thought I would confess I was scared, not assuming it to be some ghost or something (trust me I don’t believe in ghosts :p),but you would agree that there would be obvious fear of the unknown and that too something like that of anklet sound at such late hours…

However the next night again,I hear the same sound and the ‘brave me’ thought of finding it out;I tried to follow the direction of sound and went downstairs,to find the security guard carrying a bunch of keys and walking in the lobby;I concluded that the sound must be because of these men walking with the bunch of keys and being playful in between.Totally convinced,I started ignoring the sound (very feeble sound, but being night, you can’t ignore).

Life was peaceful err soundful 😛 ,till me with my in law and husband happened to go for late night walk and me sharing with them how the sound coming, audible to them too kept me awake and how I found out the reason. However when we went down we could not see the guard with the keys, but still the sound kept on coming…Next day I was at home and the sound was audible in day time too…
The possibilities crossed out were the bunch of keys;the cycle bell(which was the next assumption,as we saw a security guard riding a bicycle with a bell and he using them at times),this was ruled out because the same sound kept on coming even in day time.

Next few days, came different probable reasons/source of the sound…like wind chimes in somebody’s house, some sound making toy tied to to some kid’s stroller, and yes may be if ghost really exist who has all the time to wander around my flat all night and now day time too :P.

Consciously or subconsciously even I kept on thinking about it till today morning…the day when the mystery was about to unfold…I was getting ready for office, when suddenly the sound heard was from a close distance, and I turned to see a pair of pigeon on the washrooms ventilator.I tried to go close, then the pigeons flew and sat on the opposite ventilator of the neighbors washroom and to my amazement what I see is the source of the sound in the feet one of the pigeons.Yes,one of the pigeons had tiny anklets in both its feet and whenever this pigeon moves, flies, walks in and around my flat/bedroom window,I hear that,I cant stop myself from saying in Hindi ‘Payal ki Jhankar’ 😛 ( sound of the anklets) I would have not believed it if I would not have seen it,and to make others believe I took a picture of the pair and I could make out they were liking the attention they were getting;as I had called my parents in law to witness my discovery.

Finally the mystery was solved and I could relax mentally, though the sound keeps coming then and now, however knowing the reason,I find it sweet now 😛 :D.

This whole episode was an interesting, intriguing experience for me and people around me,so thought why not write it down…

Good Night every body and the pigeon with anklets 🙂

PS. Please carefully look at the feet of the darker pigeon,it has anklets in its feet….

awesome lunch!

It could not have been a more better day!

Last Sunday when me and my Canadian friends Kally,Sally and Sonia were picked up by Shirley,my friend at workplace,to first shop for groceries at Reliance Fresh on the way and then cook and eat too 😉

It was planned on Saturday, and I was really not sure if I could really cook with perfection, since no cooking happening since I moved to this new place where I get to eat food made by the cook. I was excited and so were my friends…though I made a boundary beforehand that the food might not turn out well…but this never dampened their spirits!

We reached Shirley’s place by 11:45 and met her ever sweet mother in law,and the 25 days old puppy Tommy, who was so much excited to see all the pretty ladies around him. Shirley’s big house has two big aquariums and three ponds outside full of fishes…coconut trees, mango tress in the backyard and a big kitchen were we were allowed to experiment 😉 our culinary skills. It was such a pleasant change!

Thanks to my experience in outsourcing 😉 activities of peeling and chopping onion and garlic was happily implemented by Sonia, taking out mint and coriander leaves by Kally and Sally. And rest of the initial preparations were managed by me,Shirley and her MIL.

Then began the real cooking, accompanied by me acting as the host of a cooking show 😉 and my viewers and cameramen being the ever enthusiastic trio! In some time we had a good spread of food ready which included matar paneer, palak daal, basmati rice, cucumber raita, potato fry,and fresh mint chutney…and trust me the food was really good :):D And while we were busy eating what we made,Shirley’s MIL made fresh grape juice and mango juice for us…

We could have asked for nothing more:) It was an awesome lunch!

What will happen tomorrow?will I be able to do it again, what I did last time?

To be honest,I do not know 😛

Okay, let me make myself clear…its about my status tomorrow in swimming pool, when I will be told to jump in pool without swimming tube…I have been practicing with submersible tube in my last six classes and have also been observing others who were scared too when it was their turn as it will be mine tomorrow.

Last class, the trainer asked me to remove the tube and prompted me to cross the pool, and I crossed the pool from one side to other,on the shallower portion…however I am not sure how I did it :P,it just happened by fluke, did I really swim and can I swim again????

That’s a million dollar question, whose answers I will get in pool itself, and that’s what I am so scared about 😦

I was just watching some you tube videos for swimming lessons, when my roommate, who knows swimming, said it’s so funny 😀 ,but then I can see thousand of videos and thousand page visits there,so I am not funny alone 😛 😉

I know its funny to learn swimming online :P,but there are many professionally made videos out there and my only reason to see them was that extra preparation,so that I do not fail err drown 😦 😛

I feel very sleepy when I finish swimming, however the nigh before, that is today I have lost my sleep…

Now I can do nothing ,but sleep and go for swimming classes in morning…

Wish me luck!

P.S.I am sure I will be dreaming about swimming toning 😛

it’s okay

I am a kind of person who believes it is very unfair to make generalized assumptions about anything, specifically human beings.

Many a times I am into serious conversations with people, asserting, how one should not have pre-conceived notion about somebody just because you inferred something from somebody similar. Its is very natural for every body I guess to have experiences good as well as bad with people we interact in day to day life and then consciously or sub-consciously create an image about a class of people,by just having an experience of few from that class.

By class I mean anything;it can be men having opinion about women, women on men,one generation of people on another, people from one state on people of another state, people speaking language-x on people speaking language-y,students of college-a on students of college-b,residents of country-I on residents of country-P,etc etc etc...The list will be never ending, isn't it?

I hope all will agree, many a times we all make such comments and or frame certain opinions and also many a times differ from somebody on their opinions, and all this is very much humane,I would say!

Now,why am I justifying it,you would wonder!Well that's because though I myself refrain from such generic assumption because of interaction with few corrupted samples out a big lot, however I have also realized there is some sort of genuine truth behind any such opinion;because after all, when there is a class of people,it means they are/were part of some sort of common upbringing, environment, society, education, culture, influences etc etc. and then there has to be some impact of these on humankind.

And we are sometimes pointing fingers at others and sometimes fingers are pointed at us,and this is my mortal limit of understanding in this regard.

And I feel it's okay, and many a times such experiences gives us as opportunity to be both rationale and irrational;introspection and accusations;feel and make-feel,see and show...laugh at or being laughed about...learn or make others learn a about someone or be someone talked about...its a game where you are the player as well as spectator!

In the morning, when I just didn’t have an iota energy to get out of bed and start for office,a thought process, which at many times acts like ‘REDBULL’ energy drink, again made me come to office today!

When I have to go for work(daily 😛 ),sometimes in situation of bad mood or bad health(cold, cough, headache situation being common 😦 ),I just feel ‘BAD’ and life continues…,but whenever I take leave be it planned or sick leave or its weekend off,I feel good and relaxed on those days…

……..And when I have to start for office after that leave, it makes me feel ‘MORE BAD’ 😦    😛

As soon as this is thought of,I instantly decide to allow myself to feel ‘BAD’ rather than ‘MORE BAD’ 😉 😛  🙂

I know I know this sounds STUPID,but this is how it works for me… ‘SOMETIMES’ 😛  😉

Today when I was giving this GYAN to my colleague here,he had a GOOD laugh,so thought, lets enlighten others too 😛 🙂

Happy Working!
